Dare to be A.W.A.R.E.

While our “Stereotyping vs. Profiling” presentation deals with people awareness, this presentation deals more with situational awareness.

How often have you heard people on the news following a tragedy of violence comment in shock due to how “safe” they believed their neighborhood, their school, their church/synagogue, their place of business, their apartment community, et al to be?  So how did the violence occur?  Often when we rewind the proverbial tape it was due to one of two factors, if not both combined: (1) an improper assessment of the person(s) involved that lead to, or escalated into, violence, and/or (2) an improper assessment of the situation the person was in that lead to, or escalated into, violence.

A.W.A.R.E. is an acronym applied to how we look at situations and evaluate how they might escalate if not turn violent.  The acronym breaks down as follows:

  • Assess the Situation
  • Walk Away if Questionable
  • Assume Nothing
  • Remember Two Key Questions
  • Empower Others

As simple as the above strategies may seem, it is in their individual treatment during the presentation that audience members will learn to apply these strategies more effectively.  Much of this presentation highlights the role of the instincts, but does not stop there.  It is when the instincts have been combined and reinforced with sound information that true awareness, or self-awareness, is enhanced.

This presentation should be offered in a 30-45 minute program for best benefit.  It is applicable to (but not limited to) the following groups:

  • Classroom Presentations (Junior/Senior High)
  • Churches/Synagogues
  • Civic & Community Organizations
  • Crime & Neighborhood Watch Groups
  • Apartment Communities
  • Home Owners Associations
  • Multi-Tenant Buildings
  • Residential Real Estate Offices
  • Gun Ranges & Gun Clubs
  • Martial Arts Schools
  • Etc.
